the story of metung hot springs

Tucked into the rolling hills and waterways of East Gippsland, Metung Hot Springs is more than a regional destination; it’s a project seeped in rediscovery, community spirit, and a deep connection to nature. Set amidst the stunning backdrop of the Gippsland Lakes, our sanctuary of wellness and relaxation invites guests to immerse themselves in experiences that are both grounded in history and inspired by a vision to revive hot springs bathing in the region.

a source reborn

The story of Metung Hot Springs begins nearly a century ago, when miners drilling in the area during the 1920s made an accidental discovery — geothermal water bubbling up from deep within the earth. It wasn’t long before locals began to embrace the therapeutic warmth of the springs, and in the decades that followed, simple pools were established to harness the healing properties of the natural resource.

By the 1960s, what began as a paddling pool for children evolved into a beloved community space, and in 1976, three cemented pools were officially constructed with local support. These pools became an integral part of Metung’s fabric, drawing families and visitors who came to relax, soak, and enjoy the restorative waters. Anecdotes of the time speak to the spring's uniqueness, including one colourful tale of a local doctor, Atkinson-Wood, who piped gas from the springs to heat his home.

Though the original pools closed in the mid-1990s, the memory of warm afternoons spent bathing and the timeless pull of the water remained a cherished practice amongst locals.

a new chapter, a revived experience

In 2018, a new vision for the springs began to take shape on a 25-acre property overlooking the region’s expansive waterways. Spearheaded by Charles Davidson, the founder of Peninsula Hot Springs, and brought to life in partnership with passionate East Gippsland locals Adrian and Rachel Bromage, the project set out to reawaken the region’s geothermal heritage and transform it into a premier wellness destination.

Today, Metung Hot Springs stands as a tribute to that vision. It offers a curated blend of globally inspired bathing and wellness experiences, from scenic hilltop pools with sweeping lake views to private barrel baths nestled in native bushland. Guests can also unwind in the day spa, enjoy nourishing dining, or extend their stay in luxurious glamping accommodation designed for deep rest and reconnection.

While Rachel and Adrian have since moved on to new ventures, their legacy is deeply ingrained in the foundations of Metung Hot Springs. As it stands, the site is led by Mike Ronchi, a values-driven leader with a focus on meaningful guest connection and mindful hospitality. Under his guidance, the team continues to honour the original spirit of the springs, one of healing, community, and harmony with the land.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning local who created memorable moments bathing in the original bubbling baths, Metung Hot Springs welcomes you to immerse yourself in our restorative springs and, in doing so, become part of our ever-evolving journey.
